The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a well-qualified, inspirational and ambitious Subject Leader of Art, Textiles & Photography to join Thomas Deacon Academy. The Arts department have made significant improvements over the last few years; grades in the Arts have improved with over 80% of students achieving a Grade 4 in Art, Photography and Textiles and 20% achieving Grades 7-9.We are now looking for a strong and determined leader to continue this journey during a period of maternity leave.

The department is very well resourced with 7 separate Art studios and a team of dedicated, specialist Arts teachers and technicians. There is an increase in the up-take of the Arts at post-16 with the introduction of Digital Photography at A Level (AQA specification). Our students achieved 40% A*-A in Fine Art, and 60% A*-B in Photography in 2019.

The department is made up of the Head of Department (DT, Art, IT) Subject leader – DT, Subject Leader – Art, Subject Leader – Computer Science & IT along with a large number of specialist teachers.

The Person

You will:

  • Be a passionate, inspiring teacher of Art, Textiles and/or Photography.
  • Have recent experience of successful leadership.
  • Be able to evidence a key contribution to sustained school improvement.
  • Demonstrate experience of inspirational team leadership/membership and development.
  • Know how to actively engage parents as partners in the education of their children, including those harder to reach.
  • Be adept at challenging educational under-achievement and inspiring children to reach their full potential.
  • Have high expectations for the behaviour and academic progress of young people.
  • Be ambitious and have the energy and creativity to make a significant contribution to the whole academy.
